This February, as Valentine’s Day brings the inevitable annual onslaught of all things heart-shaped, it’s likely you’ll be thinking about your heart more than usual.

But whatever the status of your love life, matters of the heart should be considered all year round. We’re asking asking all Leeds residents: “How healthy is your heart?”

Someone dies from heart and circulatory diseases every three minutes in the UK – equating to 460 deaths a day, and 17,000 every year.

Our ‘5 Ways to a Healthy Heart’ campaign is challenging improve the health of their hearts by following five simple steps:

  1. Be smoke free

Not smoking is the best thing you can do for your heart and your health

  1. Drink less

Keeping under 14 units per week will benefit your health and energy levels

  1. Be more active

By keeping active for 30 minutes on most days, you can reduce your risk of stroke or heart disease by 35%

  1. Eat more healthily

Eating healthily can prevent problems with blood pressure and cholesterol

  1. Manage your weight

By losing just 5-10% of your weight, you will reduce the strain on your heart.

Whatever your age, doing any of the above steps can only be beneficial to the health of your heart – and to your health in general. But do you know what your heart age is?

Eligibility Criteria
Our Cooking Skills courses are £8 per session for 8 sessions. However, you may be eligible for a subsidised rate of £2 per session, if you:

• Are from a BME community
• Are from a new or emerging community
• Have or are at risk of developing a long term health condition
• Are pregnant (including your partner)
• Have a mild to moderate health condition
• Are a care leaver
• Are in receipt of benefits
