How the South Asian, African and Caribbean Eatwell Guide helps you achieve a healthy and balanced diet.

We all need to make sure we take care of our bodies, but for some of us our genetics or ethnicity can make us more likely to be affected by certain diseases and conditions. In order to ensure we all live long and healthy lives, it is important that we are aware of how we can lower the risk of developing these illnesses.

Compared to other ethnic groups, members of the South Asian community are more likely to develop heart disease and Type 2 diabetes, and members of the Black African and Caribbean community are more likely to suffer from hypertension (high blood pressure), heart disease, and stroke. We believe that by providing healthy eating education to these communities, the risks of developing ill health can be lessened.

It is recommended that high risk communities consume more fruits and vegetables and reduce the amount of sugar, salt and fat in their diets. They are also encouraged to engage in more physical activity. To give an overview of this advice, current healthy eating guidelines such as the Eatwell Guides can be a helpful starting point.

The Eatwell Guide is designed to help you make healthier choices when you are deciding what to eat. It is based on the five main food groups and illustrates a variety of foods from each group. The Eatwell Guide can help with home cooking, grocery shopping, dining out at a restaurant, or choosing food on the go. The aim is to fill your diet with a healthy balance of different foods.

Through the Eatwell Guide, you will learn more about some popular foods that are associated with African, Caribbean, and South Asian communities. It also defines the government dietary recommendations so that you can better understand the nutritional information on food labelling and packaging. A visual representation of food and drink makes healthy eating more understandable.

Most importantly, the Eatwell Guide presents realistic and appropriate measures and recommendations. Although the Eatwell guide does not represent what your plate should look like, but how to balance your diet daily and weekly in proportion to the guide suggestions, you will also be able to gain a better understanding of different food groups by using the guide. As a result, you can begin a healthy balanced diet based on making choices from each category. This will ensure that your body gets enough nutrients and that you do not consume too much sugar, salt and fat, which could result in serious health issues.
